Kusoma – our new African reading club

Would you like to join us to discover and enjoy the world of African and Caribbean  literature?

KUSOMA (“Read” in Swahili) is the new Waka Waka African reading club which will meet every fourth Monday at Newcastle City Library Room 8, starting on Monday 24 March 18:00-19:30 (future dates and times to be confirmed by the readers)

The Library will kindly make available the books that we will read and discuss, the first of which will be the novel Americanah by the Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, published in 2013.

“There are some novels that tell a great story and others that make you change the way you look at the world. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah is a book that manages to do both. It is ostensibly a love story – the tale of childhood sweethearts at school in Nigeria whose lives take different paths when they seek their fortunes in America and England – but it is also a brilliant dissection of modern attitudes to race, spanning three continents and touching on issues of identity, loss and loneliness.”  Elizabeth Day, The Observer

Contact barbara.bravey@newcastle.gov.uk (Newcastle Library) to join the new group, which will be coordinated by author and senior lecturer in creative writing Pauline Hughes Plummer
